good friday is “good”?

Good Friday.  When I was a kid, it was the most sobering day of the year.  Part of the silent days, between Holy Thursday and Easter morning, it was a day to consider Christ and His suffering.  At least that is how I thought of it as a kid.

As I’ve grown in my understanding of Scripture, I think differently about that day.  Without a doubt, there is suffering.  You can see that if you’ve caught Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ.  But what has caught and held my attention is the why of Good Friday, the reason behind Christ’s suffering and death.

What makes Good Friday good?  The day of ultimate sacrifice, God lives out the depth of His love for us, making the payment for our sins against Him through the holy perfect sacrifice of Jesus.  Simply put, He did it for me, and for you.  So that He could have a relationship with us.

Check the story out here in four minutes.  It’s an endless source of amazement to me.  May it be to you as well.

There is no greater love than this, than a man lay down his life for his friends.
