The approach of Summer still makes me anticipate certain flavors. Even though, now, you can get many of these things year round. But when I was a kid, we would look forward to these summertime treats. You could almost mark the progression of the season by what fruits & vegetables were ripening. Each month brought new foods to the table. Nothing could beat the flavor of those home grown fruits, nor the fun that came with them.
Here are my top ten:
- tomatoes, cucumbers & lettuce from the garden
- watermelon
- green McIntosh apples straight from the tree, juicier with salt
- London broil on the grill
- my mom’s potato salad
- corn on the cob
- fudgesicles & cherry creamsicles from the guy across town who made his own popsicles
- cherries straight off the tree
- barbecued anything
- sausage & peppers on a crusty Italian roll
Grateful for the bounty of summer, rich in color and flavor, but most of all, the memories and relationships associated with each of these. Each one a good and perfect gift.
Climbing trees, spitting seeds, weeding the garden, seeing who could eat an ear of corn the fastest, then wiping the butter off your face with the back of your hand, the musical tones of the ice cream truck, the hubbub and lights of the local church festivals–all made for good summertime fun! Just so thankful- still savoring.
Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.
What are your favorite summertime flavors? and what fun memories come with them?
Tomatoes! Raspberries! Cherries! BBQ roasted ears of corn (yuuummmm!) riding my bike, playing softball with the neighborhood kids, bbq roasted corn on the cob, laying in the grass looking up at the sky…thinking, then getting bored! 🙂
:). Mostly swimming, now that I think about it!
Twinkies, chocolate milk and Doritos in eighth grade while playing Seawolf arcade game! Riding the sprinklers on the golf course at night until security chased us off! Fishing and swimming in Canada. Camping. Grandpas cabin and fly fishing on the Conejos River! Summer Projects!
Riding the sprinklers?
watermelon, strawberries, and “Bomb Pops” from the ice cream man, staying out late with neighbor friends as we caught lightning bugs and kept them overnight in jars (after our dads pierced the lids, of course). Such fun!
I forgot about lightning bugs! Great memory!
Ice Cream! 4th of July fireworks! Cool mountain climbs!
I still like the sound of firecrackers on the Fourth!
